The Gift of True Identity
Parents, you probably know your children better than anyone other than God. Who, then, is better equipped to call out each child’s unique identity? What aspects of God’s nature do you see in your children? For example, are they sensitive and caring of others? Rather than seeing them as too easily hurt, call out those qualities and tell them they have the loving nature of God. Are they strong-willed? Rather than seeing them as stubborn, call out their strength as a quality of leadership, as determined and persevering, and who like Jesus, see their purpose and follow it, no matter what the cost. Identify and encourage the qualities you see in your children that are consistent with the character and nature of God. Let them know these are aspects of God’s nature so they recognize their value. Give your children the gift of speaking aloud their God-given qualities when you see them exhibited in your children, encouraging those qualities during times they struggling, and valuing those qualities as God does. A child who knows their God-given identity and lives true to it is an emotionally healthy child.
